uPVC accounts for the large majority of window installations in the UK, and for good reason: it is the cheapest frame material, needs almost no maintenance, and modern profiles insulate well. The extras that quietly inflate a quote

Colour: white is the baseline. Anthracite grey, woodgrain foils or dual-colour frames add 10–20%.
Glass upgrades: acoustic glass, obscured bathroom glass and integral blinds each add per-window cost.
Trickle vents: now required on most replacements under Part F — usually included, but check the quote.
Making good: replastering reveals or replacing internal sills is sometimes quoted separately. Ask.

Rule of thumb: if a whole-house uPVC quote works out above roughly £850 per standard window, you are probably paying for the salesperson, not the windows. Get two more quotes — the spread between installers on identical jobs is routinely 30% or more.

Is uPVC the right choice?

For most homes, yes — it is the best value by a distance. Consider alternatives when: your home is in a conservation area (timber may be required); you want very large panes or minimal frames (aluminium is stiffer, allowing slimmer profiles); or you plan to stay 30+ years in a period property where timber suits the character and can be repaired indefinitely.
